Guide to Australian Broadband
With so many options available it is easy to get confused over what is best for you. Let Broadband Genie help you decide on the best plan to suit your needs!
Australia is currently operating the following broadband types: ADSL, ADSL2+, Cable, Satellite mobile broadband and wireless broadband. With this much choice, it is essential that you compare the various plans with your needs – will you be using the internet to download music, streaming internet video or is it just for general internet browsing?
Let’s look at the different broadband types in depth:
ADSL
This is the most common of Australia’s broadband types. ADSL means “Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line” and allows a high speed data transmission through existing telephone lines without interfering with normal telephone operations. Speeds for ADSL are around the 8Mbps downloading, and 384Kbps uploading. While is widely available, the speeds are regarded as low to medium. Refer to the comparisons, however remember download speeds can vary depending on a number of factors including line quality, how far from the nearest telephone exchange you live and the state of your hardware – is it up to date, and working correctly, etc? Probably best suited to people on a limited budget, or who can do without high data transfer speeds.
ADSL2+
An ADSL/ADSL2+ Filter can be attached to your phone line to cease any interference that may occur with Broadband Internet and Phone line communications running simultaneously. ADSL2+ is used by people requiring faster broadband speeds for applications such as real time video streaming, online gaming, and by small businesses needing to download large files quickly from the internet. Speeds are quoted at up to 24Mbps download and 2 Mbps uploading – but remember that to receive the optimal speeds you need to be close to the telephone exchange – something many regional Australians simply can’t do.
Best suited to city dwellers with a need for speed on a budget.
Naked DSL
The term used to describe an ADSL2+ broadband connection that doesn’t need or use the PSTN – or old copper home phone line. The phone line is still there but is inactive and doesn’t require the ongoing payment of line rental. Compare ISPs before you commit –and remember the cost savings you make by not paying for line rental are often negated by the ISPs requiring you to sign up to a bundle deal with Voice over IP (VoIP), which costs about the same as the line rental.
The convenience factor kicks in if you make local, interstate and international calls – VoIP can really save you a bundle there. Remember, if VoIP isn’t attractive to you, Naked DSL probably isn’t the right plan for you – if there is something wrong with your internet connection, you lose your phone line as well.
Naked DSL will probably work best for people who communicate mainly via their mobile phones and are looking for a low cost solution.
Cable
Utilising the communication infrastructure laid across the country almost twenty years ago, cable is limited in its’ availability at present. It claims speeds of up to 30 Mbps download and 1 Mbps up using Telstra, or 20 Mbps down and 512Kbps up using Optus it is best to closely compare the plans on offer.
Cable offers high download speeds, but care should be taken when examining the plan to ensure availability, as well as competiveness with other options.
Fibre
The much vaunted National Broadband Network is designed to bring Fibre to Australia with speeds so fast some servers will have trouble keeping up. Specifications point to an astounding 100Mbps download with a very speedy 5Mbps up , however at present its’ availability is very rare.
Wireless broadband
Using the 3G mobile phone infrastructure Wireless Broadband offers up to 21Mbps download speed with 1.92Mbps uploading via the Telstra plan. (Speeds vary with other ISPs) While available across most of the country, the speeds do vary with your location. Some limited regions are currently using alternate technologies such as WiMax to bolster the service.
On the plus side Wireless allows you to send data via the mobile phone network, giving you plenty of freedom to move around, however on the downside, just as with your mobile phone, if you can’t get a signal, you can’t use the internet. This makes wireless problematic for applications such as on line gaming.
Be wary, also, of the price increases incurred if you breach the cap on your plan – in some cases the price increase is steep.
Satellite
Using a combination of satellite and phone line or in some cases a two-way satellite this option doesn’t offer much in the way of speed. In most cases it is around the 1 Mbps mark for downloads, although it can be advertised up to 4Mbps, with an upload speed of 512Kbps.
It also requires an expensive installation, however is regarded as a last resort for some in remote areas with no other means to access the internet.
Plan Types
Prepaid Mobile Broadband
Prepaid Mobile Broadband and Prepaid Wireless Broadband can be the best option for people on the move. These plans offer flexibility and great coverage without the hassles of early exit fees from fixed contracts.
Broadband Bundles
For many households it can work out cheaper to bundle the home broadband service with other connections such as the phone line, or the mobile phone.
