Buyers Guide: Broadband and phone deals
Bundling together phone and broadband
You can save money on your utility bills and get a better value broadband package by signing up to a broadband deal with a bundled phone service. As well as avoiding paying two separate bills you will find, as you're only dealing with one provider, you can make a saving on your monthly subscription. It also keeps the admin tidier, with one bill covering both.
Take a look at the broadband and phone deals listed with Broadband Genie's comparison table and you can check out the variety of deals available ranging from basic line rental to unlimited local and national calls.
How do I decide what's best for me?
The phone deals available from different Australian providers vary enormously so it's important to do a bit of background research comparing the 'Phone' description in each deal listed. Think carefully about how you and your family use your phone, where you call on a regular basis and for how long. Remember, you're trying to save money by bundling in your broadband and phone service, so it's ideal not to be swayed into signing up for more than you need.
Obviously, the more generous the deal, the more you will have to pay on a month-by-month basis. You will probably find the contract length is longer too.
It's important to make sure the broadband connection making up a bundle is up to scratch for you. Think about how you use your broadband connection. If you like to stream movies or like playing games online then you should look for a deal which will offer fast download speeds and a generous monthly data cap.
You may find broadband and phone bundles with longer contract lengths, heftier download caps and speedier downloads wave the need to pay for a connection. However, if you're opting for a cheaper deal expect to pay anywhere between $60-$150 to get the ball rolling.
Here are some of the common phone and broadband deals on offer:
Free line rental You won't get any free or discounted calls with broadband and phone deals offering just free line rental. However, it's a good way of making sure you only have to deal with one provider. Bundled line rental will usually work out cheaper than if you were setting up a home phone separately with another provider.
Unlimited local national calls Choosing a broadband and phone deal with unlimited local and national calls is a perfect option if you often use your phone to catch up with friends or family. Without worrying about racking up a hefty bill you have more freedom to call and chat for as long as you like.
As well as landline numbers some broadband and phone deals also give you the opportunity to bundle in free calls to GSM mobile telephones. However, to avoid being stung by additional bills take the time to get familiar with the rules and to understand the details of your free time. There may be a maximum amount of time you can call GSM mobiles, and additionally, you may only be able to use up those free minutes during off peak hours.
Flat-rate calls You'll still have to foot the bill for broadband and phone deals with flat-rate calls, but it will be very clear what you will be spending, no matter what day of the week it is or the time of day.
Make sure you look out for packages including "Anytime" calls and make a note of the charges. Netspace favours this method of billing and gives you the opportunity to call local, national and international landline numbers for a flat rate of 25 cents per minute. Mobile numbers from this provider are a little more expensive at 39 cents. In order to make use of this deal though you will have to agree to spend a minimum monthly total on calls.
How do I use Broadband Genie's Comparison table
To track down a broadband and phone deal that suits you don't forget to make use of the filter options at the top of the comparison table.
If you have a preference for one broadband provider over another it's easy to show the results of just one using the left-hand drop-down menu. Alternatively, the 'Sort by' menu can be used to display only the most appropriate contract deals according to the most popular options, how much you will have to pay to setup the contract, how much you're obliged to pay every month and how long your contract will be.
If you want to make sure you sign up to a broadband and phone contract with enough punch to cater for heavy use you can also sort the results by broadband download speed or monthly data limit.
