About Optus
Optus is Australia's second largest telecoms company with around 11 per cent of the country's telecoms market. It is the biggest rival to incumbent telecoms giant Telstra, which is three times its size. Optus sees itself as something of an underdog, a 'challenger spirit'; and credits itself with bringing Australian telecoms prices down by bringing genuine competition to the market. In addition to having some network infrastructure of its own (the only company to do so outside of Telstra), Optus also leases network services from Telstra, making it ironically one of Telstra's biggest customers.
The company is a subsidiary of Singapore Telecommunications, and in turn owns a number of other brands, such as Virgin Mobile Australia and Boost Mobile. In 1998 the company bought up one of Australia's earliest ISPs, Microplex, in order to provide dial-up internet services. Cable broadband services were introduced in 1999 and ADSL came along in 2004, with ADSL2+ entering the picture from the end of 2005.
Now, through its OptusNet brand, the company offers dial-up internet as well as broadband services via ADSL and satellite. It is one of five Australian ISPs to offer cable broadband in a limited number of cities - in this case Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It also offers wireless broadband, with 96 per cent network coverage on its 3G networks.
Despite being much smaller than rival Telstra, Optus maintains a position of providing healthy competition, announcing recently that it would upgrade its three-city east coast cable network for a fraction of the price of Telstra's $300 million Melbourne upgrade.
